It gives me a lot of hope that the essay is just that much closer to finding a home, and maybe out of the other half a dozen journals it's went to, one editor will love it enough to publish it. (The difference between good and great, is not only subtle at times, it can also be a bit arbitrary). Those personalized/nice rejections are incredibly motivating to me, goading me to work harder.
